Comment on a teaching idea.
Due to my own problems in terms of punctuation I thought about looking for a teaching idea, which deals with that kind of problem. I found the page teachingideas which provided me with some punctuation tasks.
The tasks were devided into various catagories such as punctuation, comma, paragraphs, capital letters, speach marks...Additionally, they are categorized into age groups. So, one is able to estimate the right workload for his or her class.
Besides a good range of tasks, the page is also able to provide one with the correct answers for many excercises.
Exemplarily, the following task can be pointed out :
A young boy has written this story, but he does not know about punctuation.
Can you put in the capital letters, full-stops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks and speech marks for him?
morris the martian was flying around the solar system one day when he saw a strange light in front of him
what is that he thought to himself morris was scared but he flew a little bit closer so that he could see it better
hello he called out there was no reply hello is anyone there he called but again there was no reply suddenly a creature appeared in front of the light
boo it shouted poor morris was really scared and he flew off home and hid under his bed
The anwer to this exercice is easy accessable and one is able to hand them out to the students, if necessary.
This is the correct version of the text:
Morris the Martian was flying around the Solar System one day, when he saw a strange light in front of him.
What is that? he thought to himself. Morris was scared, but he flew a little bit closer so that he could see it better. "Hello," he called out. There was no reply.
"Hello. Is anyone there?" he called, but again there was no reply. Suddenly a creature appeared in front of the light.
"BOO!" it shouted. Poor Morris was really scared and he flew off home and hid under his bed.
This task would be reasonable for the age 7 to 11 and could be appropriate for (dealt with as) homework or inclass work, which could be compared via partner-work easily.
Evaluation:
This task is easy to understand and so is the whole page. It holds solveable exercises and texts. The estimated age group fits well and the tasks are not too difficult or random, so that the students are able to understand the relevance for such tasks.
A negative aspect is, that not every task includes the correct answers and that the page appears a little bit overloaded. Some exercises and ideas are not complete or worked-out all the way to the end. But all in all it is a good and helpful webside.
